The More the Merrier?
The 2020 Democratic Presidential quest grew larger this weekend with formal announcements from Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Amy Klobuchar. More U.S. Senators. We have not yet seen a Governor declare but Washington State's Jay Inslee is giving direct signals that he'll probably go for it. It would appear that the Republican mega field will be repeated by the Democrats this time. The question is will they handle it better with regards to debates? If they follow the Republican model of dividing candidates into tiers based on polling they will do a great disservice to their party and more importantly the American voter.
It's too early to make predictions absent decisions by Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. It's not too early to point out that Elizabeth Warren has a problem that isn't going away, the discovery of her Texas Bar Association document in her own handwriting stating she is Native American has been reignited. This is something I've never understood about Warren. Mostly because she really hasn't provided a complete and good answer to why she ever asserted that. There is no evidence she ever benefited from it but there is substantial evidence she will pay a price for it, perhaps her chance of being the nominee if she doesn't find a way to put it behind her.
Cory Booker has a problem with the super charged activist base of the Democratic Party and that is his perceived closeness with Wall Street. It's the same problem Hillary Clinton had with those same activists. Will they be as hard on him as they were her? If not, why not? Will his fellow candidates stay away from it? We shall see.
Amy Klobuchar may not be a household name but she'll become one and could prove to become the one you have to beat. She's a sharp, tenacious mid-westerner who has the ability to appeal to independents and moderate Republicans while keeping most Democrats happy. Watch her candidacy closely.
This is the Presidency, the highest level of the bloodsport that is politics. While the field is forming it's warm and fuzzy for all, then the gloves come off and it's time to bring the real fight.
