Mr. Trump and Mr. Mueller
NBC News has reported that negotiations between the President's team and Special Counsel Mueller's team to set up an interview on the obstruction of justice portion of the investigation has collapsed and that Trump will not meet with Mueller. This is news to who? On what planet?
Trump was never going to sit down for an interview with Mueller, no matter what he has publicly said. He was lying for the sake of delaying. The only real news, if accurate, is that Mueller may go ahead and submit his report on the obstruction of justice portion of the investigation, outlining four main points. It had previously been reported that Mueller was possibly going to submit this report by July, if Trump was interviewed. If indeed that interview won't take place and it won't, that report could potentially come much earlier but only Mueller knows for sure.
Trump is now publicly musing about firing Mueller and even his Press Secretary is regurgitating that the President personally has the authority to fire Mueller. He doesn't under current regulations. He would have to rewrite the regulation granting himself that authority which would result in a court battle prolonging the ordeal. Meanwhile Republicans in the Senate are sitting on their hands under the leadership of Mitch McConnell who has refused to allow a law to come to the floor for debate which would prohibit the President from firing Mueller, only a Senior Justice Department official would be allowed to do this and they would have to show cause. Once again Republicans are dragging their feet in defense of Trump.
What will the Republican controlled Congress do if Trump goes on a firing spree at the Justice Department in order to get rid of Mueller? If the past year and a half are any indication, things do not bode well for the rule of law in our Republic and would establish, for the first time in our history, that the President of the United States is above the law.
Even if Trump succeeds in firing Mueller, his legal troubles are far from over and this and other investigations will continue.
The Trump Presidency is like a runaway train running at high speed on rotten track and every boxcar is filled with TNT.
