Mrs. Pence Takes a Job
Karen Pence, wife of Vice-President Mike Pence, has returned to her chosen profession of teaching. She accepted a part-time position at Immanuel Christian School in northern Virginia. She has every right to work and congratulations to her.
So what's the controversy? The Pences are Evangelical Christians who subscribe to what many consider draconian beliefs concerning gay and transgender people. The school Mrs. Pence works for is quite up front about their position on the subject, requiring written agreements from employees and parents of students, the message is clear no gays allowed and transgender, what the hell is that?
Take a deep breath. It's okay to discriminate against the L.G.B.T.Q. community in most of the United States. The legalization of same sex marriage in no way gave complete and equal rights under the law to us. Only when Congress is finally forced to recognize that gay rights are not special rights but human rights will we see true change. Keep the pressure on Congress to finally extend the country's Civil Rights laws to protect the L.G.B.T.Q. citizens of the United States, no matter where they live.
Mike Pence has responded to the criticism of his wife's choice with this statement "...the criticism of Christian education in America must stop." Those are the words of a fanatic and dictator. Freedom is grounded in criticism. The Pences believe in one form of Christian education, there are many others who categorically reject their interpretation, of course most of those use the teaching of Jesus Christ to inform their views, so what do they know.
I willingly stand in the public square and defend Karen Pence's right to work wherever she wants and for she and her husband to believe whatever they want. I will also stand in the same public square and strongly oppose their ignorance and bigotry masked behind the veil of religion.
