Trump vs. Sessions

In 2016 then U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions became the first and most prominent conservative Republican to forcefully come out for Donald Trump's Presidential run. He became a close advisor and chief cheerleader throughout the campaign. Loyal to the core and Trump prizes loyalty above all, though he does not reciprocate. Naturally when Trump won, people lined up for their reward of power. Senator Sessions got his reward, Attorney General, Trump's man at the Justice Department. And their marriage was beautiful, for about three months.

Through his own stupidity Trump brought about the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the Russia investigation, causing Jeff Sessions to have no choice but to recuse himself from oversight of the investigation because he himself is a subject of it because of his campaign involvement. From the moment Sessions recused himself Trump has been seething with contempt for him. He has publicly humiliated him and continually attacked him on Twitter. Sessions has basically taken the abuse. But today after another Twitter tirade from Trump, Jeff Sessions fired back stating that as long as he is Attorney General he will uphold the law. It was a longer statement and unlike the President it was done professionally and delivered in a compotent manner. Let me interpret for you Mr. President, what A.G. Sessions said was, unlike the ignorant American President I'm actually a lawyer that knows what my duties require and no matter what you say I'm going to do it. If you don't like it, kiss my ass and fire me. I hope that was helpful Mr. President.

Listening to a bobble head commentator on T.V. this evening trivializing Trump's Twitter attacks on Sessions as meaningless because if he wanted him gone he could just fire him, I could but shake my head. That's true, the President can certainly fire anybody he wants but he has a big problem doing that to Sessions. There's another powerful old Republican in the U.S. Senate named Chuck Grassley who also happens to be Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Grassley made it publicly clear when these attacks on Sessions began that he had no intention of holding hearings on a new Attorney General because the committee was busy.

If Trump fires Sessions the Senate will sit on it's hands and Trump will still be stuck with the Russia investigation because Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who appointed Robert Mueller would become the acting Attorney General. Trump wants a new Attorney General who will do his bidding and fire Mueller and shut down the investigation.

Trump wants Sessions to resign so that he can say what a great guy he is and then the Senate would have a difficult time stonewalling him on a new A.G. because after all, Sessions left on his own and the American people deserve a good Attorney General.

I disagree politically with Sessions on many issues but I hope he continues his role and fires back more often and absolutely forces Trump to fire him. If he does, Sessions should issue a public statement that he was definitely fired and did not submit a resignation.

Trump's cyber bullying is disgraceful but the man baby President seems unable to control himself. Perhaps a long rest in one of those Mental Institutions he wants to bring back would be helpful, along with E.C.T. and heavy medication.
