Don't Touch This

Joe Biden is what we used to call, "overly familiar". Politicians are required to shake hands, kiss babies and feign interest in the voters personal stories if they want to get elected. Most seem fake while doing it. That's because they are. Biden is one of those rare politicians who is genuinely warm in public and private. A touchy feely guy who needs to let you know he cares...yuk.

I'm not a hugger myself nor do I have a need to touch someone to connect with them and I certainly don't want anyone touching me, most of the time. A handshake is all I require, if that. Affection between friends and family is one thing, a public setting with a stranger is completely different.

I've met a lot of politicians of all levels including a former Vice-President who wanted to be President. Beyond a handshake and never-ending smile none ever embraced or touched in any other way. That former V.P. was standing right next to me at a fundraiser and he never offered to even shake my hand let alone sniff my hair, of course he couldn't because he was shorter than me. Two things were clear to me as I looked at that V.P.'s vacant eyes, the first was that he viewed me as an ant and he couldn't understand why I would try to speak to him and second, he didn't want to be there. The crab puffs and cheese plates were disgusting by the way.

Seven women have now complained about "inappropriate behavior" by Joe Biden. They've made it clear they don't view his familiarity as sexual in nature but they were made uncomfortable. The behavior is what we have all witnessed Biden doing for decades with both men and women. Since these alleged non-allegation sentiments were first expressed many women who have been on the receiving end of Biden's affection have defended him. Biden himself released a video addressing the complaints in which he said he "gets it", he must be more mindful of people's personal space. He made it very clear that he was remorseful for having ever made anyone uncomfortable. But for some it isn't enough, they want a personal apology to everyone who has complained.

Shortly after the video Biden delivered a speech at a union event where he made a couple of jokes about his personal style. Even before the speech was over the cable shows were already making the jokes a news story and using words like "cringe worthy". They weren't and anyone  watching the event live knows that. Biden then held an unscheduled press briefing outside the event. He answered the questions very well but it wasn't enough. He stated again he never intended to make anyone uncomfortable but that he would not apologize for his intentions.

Joe Biden will announce his Presidential bid soon. Is there a political aspect to this story? Maybe. Would other Democratic Presidential hopefuls wish he wouldn't run? Absolutely. They fear his name recognition and potential fundraising ability. His appeal in the Midwest will be YUGE, but can only translate to primary victories if large numbers of Democrats and independents turn out. If only the activist base turns out he will not be the nominee.

I am not a member of the Democratic Party but my advice to them is don't touch this.
